Ceist:

663 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government whether the European charter of local self-government has been formally ratified by the State; and if not, when this will be done; and, if he will make a statement on the matter. [1776/98]

Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Dempsey):

Ireland signed the European Charter of Local Self Government on 7 October 1997. Ratification requires Dáil approval. The necessary motion will be brought before the Dáil as soon as possible.
