Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Charitable Donations.

Ceist:

751 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of moneys given by his Department to charities for each of the years from 1990 to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1242/98]

Between 1990 and 1996 the Department of Justice made the following funding available to the Irish Association of Victim Support, who have "charitable status", by way of a contribution towards the Association's administration and training costs:

£

1990

8,000

1991

12,000

1992

15,000

1993

18,000

1994

110,000

1995

130,000

1996

180,000

In 1997, the Department of Justice was amalgamated with the Department of Equality and Law Reform and funding of £280,000 was provided for victim support. Funding this year will increase to £645,000.
Between 1994 and 1996, the Department of Equality and Law Reform provided funding to a number of voluntary organisations providing marriage counselling services:

£

1994 (54 organisations)

750,000

1995 (58 organisations)

750,000

1996 (75 organisations)

900,000

Between 1994 and 1996, the Department of Equality and Law Reform provided funding to a number of voluntary organisations in respect of pilot childcare projects:

£

1994 (36 organisations)

250,000

1995 (37 organisations)

800,000

1996 (36 organisations)

800,000

In 1997, my Department disbursed a total of £145,000 to organisations to provide for the implementation of pilot community disability projects throughout the country. Moreover, in 1997 my Department made £900,000 available to 93 separate organisations to provide marriage counselling and related services countrywide and £800,000 to 44 pilot childcare projects.
While it would not be possible, without the use of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources, to identify which of the above-mentioned organisations have charitable status, I can inform the Deputy that a considerable number of the organisations in question has charitable status.
