Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

912 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make a decision regarding a resource allocation to meet the special educational needs of Asperger's Syndrome children in the proposed Ballyroan national school pilot programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1765/98]

My Department is actively considering a proposal submitted by the Asperger's Syndrome Association of Ireland Ltd., (ASPIRE) for a pilot project at Ballyroan national school, Rathfarnham.

The main objective of the project is to evaluate the support services required for students with Asperger's syndrome attending mainstream primary schools.

A number of meetings have taken place between representatives of ASPIRE and officials of my Department in relation to the details of the proposal. The authorities at Ballyroan NS have also submitted detailed proposals regarding their possible involvement in the programme.

My Department will be having further consultations with the school authorities shortly in an effort to advance this matter.
