Vol. 486 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Report.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

120 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Finance the position in relation to the study of south Galway flooding; if he has received the report to date in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2310/98]

A draft final report has been received from the consultants who were commissioned to investigate the causes of the flooding in south Galway in 1995 and this is currently being examined by a project review team consisting of officials from the Office of Public Works together with professional representatives of the Geological Survey of Ireland and the wildlife service of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. It is a very complex document running to some eight volumes and includes approximately 50 large scale maps and other A3 size drawings.

The evaluation of the report is not expected to be completed until early February when the findings will be communicated to the consultants. At that stage, they will be asked to finalise the overall report and also to provide an executive summary of same. It is envisaged that this should be available in March of this year and the contents outlined at a public meeting in Gort, as soon as practicable thereafter.
