Vol. 486 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water Supply Contamination.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

136 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that numerous representations have been made to the Western Health Board over the past 16 months regarding a public health nuisance at Derryvunny, Corrigeenroe, County Roscommon; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that in a reply to a Dáil Deputy dated 10 December 1996 the Health Board confirmed that water sampling from the area indicated a high level of faecal contamination; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that, in a reply to Parliamentary Question No. 97 of 8 April 1997 from his Department, the Western Health Board indicated that work to alleviate the problem was expected to be completed shortly; the action, if any, that has been taken in the intervening period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2286/98]

I am advised that the problem referred to was caused by overflow from a septic tank. Roscommon County Council is the statutory authority dealing with the matter and the Western Health Board, acting on an agency basis for the council, carried out water sampling in the area. The latest information available is that remedial work has been carried out to the standard required and engineering staff from the council are continuing to monitor the location.
