54 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make all the necessary arrangements for the Minister of State to travel to Romania to sign the new agreement with the Romanian Committee for Adoption and thereby address the many concerns that exist in view of that fact that many couples wishing to adopt Romanian children are now in a limbo situation. Agreement with the Romanian authorities on the terms of a co-operation agreement between Ireland and Romania has already been reached. Authority to sign the agreement was granted by Government yesterday, 28 January 1998.
I intend to travel to Romania to sign the agreement in mid-February and officials in my Department are currently liaising with the Romanian authorities in order to make the necessary arrangements.
