Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Allowances.

John Ellis

Ceist:

178 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim is having tax deducted from his pension in view of the fact that no tax is shown on his P60 for 1997. [3290/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer has not made a return of income since 1989-90. The inspector of taxes has examined his case and has learned that the taxpayer will reach the age of 75 during the current tax year. This means that he will qualify for the higher exemption limit of £10,400. As his income from his pensions will not exceed this amount the taxpayer will not be liable to tax in the current year. Arrangements are being made to issue an amended certificate of tax-free allowances and the Paymaster General will refund the tax paid to the taxpayer.
