Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Laser Beam Guns.

Ceist:

74 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of the measures, if any, he has undertaken to regulate the dangerous use of so-called laser-beam guns. [3205/98]

I am aware from media reports, and from correspondence received from the Deputy, of concern about possible safety hazards arising from the improper use of so-called laser beam guns. I am aware that the Director of Consumer Affairs has said that he is examining the issue having regard to possible breaches of trading standards. I am informed by the Garda authorities that when the gardaí receive reports that any laser devices are used in circumstances which would contravene the criminal law, the matter is investigated and where appropriate, the device is examined with a view to seeking the advice of the law officers relative to a prosecution.
