Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

81 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the date on which his Department was approached by Sligo Corporation or Sligo County Council regarding a site for a new Sligo town sewage treatment works; the nature and dates of all subsequent correspondence on the matter; and the response, if any, of his Department. [3570/98]

Preliminary proposals to construct waste water treatment works and a pumping station were submitted to my Department in August 1996 by Sligo Corporation in conjunction with an application for a foreshore lease.

Following consultations with the Department and other interested parties including Sligo Harbour Commissioners, it was decided in October 1997 that the site of the proposed development should be relocated and a lease of a different area of foreshore was sought. This required Sligo Corporation to undertake a revision of the environmental impact statement which, I understand, is nearing completion and is scheduled to be published within the next month for public comment. Upon its publication, the statutory consultation process will follow. All of the views expressed by interested parties will be carefully considered by me before I decide on the application for a foreshore lease in connection with the proposals.
