23 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will outline the timescale of the introduction of physical education into the leaving certificate syllabus as announced recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3544/98]
As a matter of priority my Department, in conjunction with the NCCA, is currently undertaking a major pilot project in physical education at junior cycle level. The intended outcome of this project is the establishment of a well structured physical education syllabus which will contribute to the overall development and well-being of students. It is also intended to introduce physical education as a subject at senior cycle. I have requested the NCCA to begin work on the preparation of the new syllabus.
