Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

55 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of males and females that have qualified as second level teachers in the secondary sector; the vocational sector in each of the past ten years; the gender trends, if any; the reason for these trends; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3594/98]

The specific qualification requirements for the purposes of teaching in a second level school vary depending on the type of school involved. In general, in order to be qualified to teach in a second level school, a person must hold a recognised degree or equivalent qualification, a recognised training-in-teaching qualification and pass a test of competency in oral Irish.

My Department does not have details of the number of persons who qualified as second level teachers in the years in question. However, the following tables show the number of males and females who registered as secondary teachers and the number who qualified for the award of the higher diploma in education in the ten years since 1986. The available figures which are shown in the tables indicate a consistent and continuing trend of significantly more females than males entering the profession.

Number awarded the Higher Diploma in Education.
