Vol. 487 No. 4

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

107 Mr. U. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the efforts, if any, she or other industrial bodies have made to locate a major industry in the vacated Tynagh Mine in County Galway. [4159/98]

The Tynagh Mines facility ceased operations in 1981 when mineral resources were exhausted. IDA Ireland has no involvement in the mining industry and this facility is therefore not included in its marketing of the area.

I am informed by Forbairt that the Tynagh Mine is privately owned and that Forbairt's west regional office has not been approached by the owners with a view to locating a major industry at the vacated mine. In terms of its overall remit, Forbairt continues to work with companies in several locations in east Galway including Athenry, Loughrea, Ballinasloe and Portumna with a view to helping them achieve increased growth and employment.
