Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

175 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the success in 1998 in his Department's efforts to acquire a site or building for use as a Garda station in Leixlip, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5655/98]

Work is under way at present on the fitting out of a building to provide a temporary Garda station in Leixlip pending the acquisition of a site and the construction of a new station.

Officials of the Office of Public Works are in continuing contact with the owners of a number of properties which may be capable of providing a suitable site for a new station, but none of these sites is available for sale at present. Officials are also actively monitoring the property market in the Leixlip area to ensure that all potential sites are examined. To date it has not been possible to acquire a suitably-sized property in a suitable location and while the search for such a site or premises continues the possibility of providing a new Garda station by means of a joint development is also being examined.
