Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Women's Education Projects.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

253 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 308 of 17 February 1998, he will name the expert group that made recommendations to him in relation to the allocation of the £600,000 fund for women's education projects; their qualifications in each case; where they are based; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5408/98]

In April 1997, the then Minister for Education announced that she was allocating £600,000 over the period 1997-99 to enable women to pursue lifelong education opportunities and to acquire access to mainstream programmes. To assist in the allocation of monies, she would establish a working group comprising representatives of the Department of Education and of voluntary and statutory agencies.

The working group was subsequently appointed with the following membership. The members were either nominated by organisations that are active in the area of women's education or appointed by the Minister for their expertise in that area.

Ms Helen Keogh

National Co-ordinator of the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme, Chairperson, Dublin

Ms Chris Mulvey

Aontas, Dublin

Sr. Pat Murray

Trócaire, Dublin

Ms Inez Bailey

National Adult Literacy Agency, Dublin

Ms Helen Johnston

Combat Poverty Agency, Dublin

Ms Maura Murray

National Women's Council, Dublin

Ms Mags O'Brien

Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed, Dublin

Ms Siobhán O'Donoghue

Community Workers' Co-operative, Galway

Ms Maureen Downey

St. Vincent's Trust, Dublin

Mr. Des O'Loughlin

Adult Education Section, Department of Education, Dublin

Criteria for the distribution of the funds were drawn up by the working group.
Applications for assistance from interested women's education groups were invited by public advertisement. Over 100 applications were received. The applications were scrutinised and recommendations submitted to the Minister by the working group. Thirteen projects have been selected for grants.
