Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Special Education Needs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

272 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if favourable consideration will be given to the provision of additional resources at Scoil San Carlo, Leixlip, County Kildare, to cater for a Downs syndrome person (details supplied) in view of the fact that the school principal has indicated that his enrolment at the school would be favourably viewed as long as the necessary back-up was granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5610/98]

The case to which the Deputy refers has already been brought to the attention of my Department. I have requested my Department's inspectorate to investigate the need for a resource teacher for the area in question. I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the resource teacher area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.

I can assure the Deputy that the needs of Scoil San Carlo will be fully considered in the context of any allocation of resource teacher posts which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
