Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Tax Yield.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

32 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance the expected yield from capital gains tax to the Exchequer for 1998; and the expected average payment per taxpayer in this regard. [5598/98]

The budget estimate for the expected yield from capital gains tax in 1998 is £104 million.

The number of assessments made in 1996 is estimated by the Revenue Commissioners to be approximately 4,530 cases. This number relates to the number of assessments raised in that year and does not necessarily relate to the net receipts for that year.

When I announced the cut in the rate of capital gains tax, I said I expected to see an increased level of activity. On this assumption, I now expect that the number of assessments for 1998 could be in the region of 7,000 cases. Given the above expected yield for 1998 this would represent an average of about £15,000 per taxpayer, subject to the qualifications outlined.
