Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Economic Policy.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

57 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance whether he has satisfied himself that the 1997-98 budget will enhance the prospects for the containment of inflation and continue to encourage growth in the economy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5563/98]

I refer the Deputy to my Budget Statement and the associated Economic Background to the Budget which set out my approach to budgetary and economic policy.

I am satisfied that my budget, which sets out to achieve a general Government surplus while reducing taxes, and assigning additional resources to addressing social priorities, training needs and investment requirements, will, in conjunction with Partnership 2000, provide the right conditions for continued economic growth.
