Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Offshore Banking Services.

John Gormley

Ceist:

84 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance the number of approved Irish owned and Irish based financial institutions which offer off-shore banking services; the number of these accounts held by these institutions; and the capital value of the sums involved. [5536/98]

The term "offshore banking services" is interpreted as deposit taking and lending by domestic branches of bank vis-à-vis non-residents. All the Irish owned and Irish based credit institutions offer banking services to non-residents. Total deposits due to non-residents, excluding interbank, at 31 December 1997 at Irish offices of these institutions amounted to approximately IR£6 billion. Lending to non-residents, excluding inter-bank at that date amounted to £3.5 billion. There is no information available in relation to the number of accounts which represent the foregoing figures.
