41 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the Government's attitude to the comments regarding water charges made by EU Commissioner Jean Francois Verstrynge during his visit to Shannon on 2 February 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5853/98]

On the occasion of the comments referred to, I reaffirmed in the clearest possible terms the Government policy of local authorities not charging for domestic water supplies. I also refer the Deputy to my reply to Priority Question No. 4 on today's Order Paper.
