Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Female Animal Permits.

Johnny Brady

Ceist:

157 Mr. J. Brady asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will consider a discontinuation of the need for a permit at the point of slaughter for female animals whose identity cards are in order in view of the hardship this is causing for herd owners. [6472/98]

The movement permit system for female animals moving to slaughter or export was introduced in September 1996 to protect markets and to give additional consumer assurances in regard to the origin of livestock and livestock products. It is appreciated that herdowners in some areas may have some difficulties with the system because of the distance from the district veterinary office but there is provision in place for obtaining permits by post and at the marts in respect of cattle sold through the mart on the day or going for slaughter or export that evening. The implementation of a computerised movement monitoring system which is currently being developed will obviate the need for the continuation of the female movement permit system.
