Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Garda Deployment.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

266 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí that are stationed at Coolock Garda station, Dublin 5; if he will increase this number in view of the fact new housing estates have been built in this district; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6221/98]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel to different areas. They have expressed concern, which I share, about supplying the kind of detailed information relating to Garda personnel sought by the Deputy, on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally.

However, I propose to give the Deputy the details he requires relating to personnel on a district basis. Coolock Garda station forms part of the Coolock Garda district (R District) along with Malahide and Howth Garda stations. According to the Garda authorities there are 173 member all ranks (as of 28 February 1998) allocated to the Coolock Garda district.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the policing situation throughout Coolock sub district is monitored on an ongoing basis with a view to ensuring that an adequate policing service is maintained. I am assured by them that when additional gardaí next become available the needs of the DMA north division will be fully considered in conjunction with the needs of other divisions throughout the country.
