Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Courts Service.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

282 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will transfer Riverstown District Court and Blarney District Court, under ministerial order, to the Cork District Court at Anglesea Street in view of the fact that these courts have not sat since 1966 and 1987 respectively and defendants, witnesses and legal representatives now have to travel to Midleton for hearings. [6443/98]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 103 of 26 February 1998 in relation to this matter. Riverstown and Blarney District Courts currently sit at the recently refurbished courthouse at Midleton, which is the closest court venue to these areas within the District Court District. The District Court areas and the court venues within those areas which comprise District Court districts are kept under review to ensure the delivery of an effective service in the context of available court accommodation and other resources. I have no proposals at present to alter the District Court districts in the Cork region but the Deputy's proposal will be borne in mind in the continuing review of this matter.
