Ceist:

93 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the requirements of regulations, if any, in force, governing the treatment, storage and disposal of waste accumulated in poultry processing plants or units. [6147/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 86, 90, 92 and 93 together.

Existing legislation requires, inter alia, that slaughtering plants have a cleansing and sanitation programme in place which covers all parts of the plant including the lairage. Conformity with these requirements is one of the supervisory activities carried out by officials of my Department at EU approved livestock slaughtering plants.

As regards, blood, non-specified risk material and waste accumulated in poultry processing plants, the European Communities Disposal, Processing and Placing on the Market of Animal By-Products Regulations, 1994, provides that animal by-products must be processed in registered establishments.
