Vol. 488 No. 5

Written Answers - Flag Regulations.

David Stanton

Ceist:

59 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the guidelines, if any, his Department has issued internally or to any agency or body in relation to the use of the national flag and the European flag. [6585/98]

No formal guidelines have been issued by this Department internally or to any agency or body in relation to the use of the national flag and the European flag.

A booklet "An Bhratach Náisiúnta", published by the Government Supplies Agency is available however and provides information on the flying of the national flag in accordance with established protocol.
The national flag always takes precedence over all other flags. The European flag is flown at Iveagh House on special occasions such as Europe Day, 9 May, and during visits of senior European Union personalities, such as the President of the European Parliament or the President of the European Commission.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has published a fact sheet 2/91 entitled "The National Flag, Arms and Anthem", a copy of which will be sent to the Deputy.

Ceist:

60 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the guidelines, if any, her Department has issued internally or to any agency or body in relation to the use of the national flag and the European flag. [6586/98]

My Department follows the instructions issued annually by the Department of the Taoiseach in relation to when the national flag should be flown.

These instructions are passed on to the relevant State companies for which my Department has responsibility.

There are no specific guidelines in existence for flying the European flag.
