Vol. 488 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Population Statistics.

Alan M. Dukes

Ceist:

2 Mr. Dukes asked the Taoiseach the population figures for each county, county borough, borough and urban district of Bray, Dundalk and Tralee electoral areas for each of the years 1986, 1991 and 1997. [5965/98]

The information requested by the Deputy in respect of 1986 and 1991 is contained in a statement which I propose to forward to the Deputy. The statement also contains corresponding information for 1996 which is the most up to date available information. The population of the State from 1991 to 1996 increased by 100,368 — the population in Leinster increased by about 63,000; in Munster, 24,000; in Connacht, 10,000 and in Ulster, 2,000. All but four counties showed population increases between 1991 and 1996. Longford, Cork County Borough, Limerick County Borough and Leitrim, showed minuscule decreases. The population of the State in the 35 year period from 1961 to 1996 increased from 2.8 million to 3.6 million.
