Vol. 488 No. 6

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

John Gormley

Ceist:

178 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of asylum seekers deported; the grounds on which their asylum applications were refused; and whether the State has confirmed in each case that the relevant country will process their asylum application. [6880/98]

Since taking up office as Minister a total of eight asylum seekers have been deported. These were people whose cases were transferred to another state party to the Dublin Convention. There was no substantive examination of their case here as this is a matter for the states to which they were returned.

In each case where a person is transferred to another state party to the Dublin Convention, the agreement of the state in question to examine the claim is obtained in advance.
