Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

426 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the need to retain a teacher in Ballyroan School, Dublin; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the Asperger syndrome project is at risk as his Department will not sanction the retention of a teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7326/98]

No decisions have yet been made regarding staffing allocations to primary schools for the 1998-99 school year.

My Department has been considering a proposal submitted by ASPIRE, Asperger Syndrome Association of Ireland Ltd., for the development of a pilot project for children with Asperger Syndrome at Ballyroan national school, Rathfarnham. I understand that the authorities at Ballyroan national school have now decided to withdraw from involvement in the proposed project.

However, my officials are in discussion with the management of a primary school in the locality with a view to establishing the proposed project for children with Asperger Syndrome in September 1998.
