29 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the total acreage currently under forestry which is privately owned; the amount owned by State agencies; the extent to which further afforestation is planned in the next three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The total area under forestry was 602,415 hectares at end December 1997. Of this area, 395,277 is owned by Coillte and 207,138 hectares is privately owned.

It is estimated that in the years 1998, 1999 and 2000 — 18,000 hectares, 20,000 hectares and 25,000 hectares respectively will be afforested.
