Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

529 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a special grant available of approximately £52,800 to Galway County Council for the raising of a tidal road at Lackenaley Creek, Mweelon, Maree, Oranmore, County Galway, where a number of houses are frequently cut off in high tides and in view of the fact that no provision has been made in the roads programme for the remedial work on this road. [9137/98]

The maintenance and improvement of non-national roads in their area is a matter for Galway County Council to be funded from their own resources, supplemented by State grants. My Department notified a 1998 non-national road grant allocation of £11,840,000 to Galway County Council on 9 February 1998. The initial selection and prioritisation of road projects to be grant aided is a matter for the road authority itself and there are no further funds currently at the disposal of my Department from which an additional grant could be made.
