Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Psychiatric Referrals.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

605 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of referrals for psychiatric assessment of defendants from the courts at both District and Circuit court level from the counties of Laois and Offaly for each of the years from 1992-97; the locations of the assessment or treatment; and whether assessment or treatment was carried out on an inpatient or outpatient basis. [8912/98]

During the period 1992-97 there were five referrals from the Circuit Court in County Laois — one each in 1993, 1994 and 1996 and two in 1997. The court has no current record of where any of these assessments took place or whether assessment or treatment was on an in-patient or out-patient basis. There were no referrals made by the Circuit Court sitting in County Offaly.

The information sought by the Deputy is not currently available from the District Courts. A search through their court records is being conducted and I will forward such information as can be readily made available to the Deputy when it comes to hand.
