776 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary schools in County Offaly without the services of remedial teaching facilities; the location of these schools; the plans, if any, he has to address the situation in order to ensure that each primary school in County Offaly has the benefits of remedial teaching facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 775 and 776 together.
There are 16 primary schools in County Laois and seven primary schools in County Offaly which do not currently have access to a remedial teacher service. Details of the individual schools in question are set out below.
My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect.
I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the remedial area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of schools in Counties Laois and Offaly will be fully considered in the context of any additional remedial teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
