Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bank Charges.

Joe Higgins

Ceist:

37 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment further to Parliamentary Question No. 149 of 21 April 1998, the number of applications for increases in bank charges, as distinct from new products, received by the Director of Consumer Affairs since 13 May 1996; the number of these applications amended; and the number of applications made in relation to new products. [10859/98]

I have been advised by the Director of Consumer Affairs that to date the majority of notifications received under section 149 of the Consumer Credit Act, 1995 have been multi-product notifications, i.e. the majority of notifications related to more than one product.

To date 16 notifications have been made to the director under section 149 of the Act. Of these four were notifications of proposals for increases in charges. In respect of three of these conditions were attached by the director or amendments were sought, while one of the notifications of proposals for increases in charges is under consideration at present. Twelve of the notifications received to date under section 149 of the Act related to charges in respect of new products.
