207 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a decision has been made to carry out an investigation into the handling of the inquest in relation to a person (details supplied) as requested in December 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11053/98]
This matter relates to the statutory duties of coroners and of the Attorney General, under the Coroners Act, 1962. Legal proceedings in relation to the inquest, which was held in December 1992, only concluded in November 1997 last, with a decision of the Supreme Court.
Conclusive legal advice on the issue, in the light of the Supreme Court decision, was only very recently received from the Attorney General. I expect to be in a position to issue a reply shortly to the bereaved person involved in this case.
