Vol. 491 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tall Ships Race.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

143 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the involvement, if any, the Naval Service will have in hosting the Cutty Sark tall ships race when it comes to Dublin in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13309/98]

The Cutty Sark tall ships race to Dublin will take place from 22 to 25 August next. The event is being organised and run by a specially created company, Tall Ships Dublin Ltd. The Naval Service is not hosting the event but will, along with other branches of the Defence Forces and the Civil Defence organisation, be providing assistance on request. At this stage Naval Service involvement includes an officer serving on the race and vessel management committee, the provision of a naval vessel to meet the tall ships fleet off the south-east coast, Naval motor launches and gemini craft, and the provision of a Naval Service diving unit from 20 to 26 August. My Department will give full consideration to any further requests received regarding the holding of this event.
