Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rented Dwellings Register.

Ceist:

246 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to provide for stiffer penalties for landlords who fail to register their properties in view of the fact that the penalties available to local authorities may not be a sufficient deterrent; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14080/98]

Landlords who fail to register their rented houses under the Housing (Registration of Rented Houses) Regulations, 1996, are liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of up to £1,000, and, if the contravention continues after conviction, to a fine not exceeding £100 for each day the offence continues. I have no proposals at present to increase these penalties.
