Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fire Stations.

Seán Power

Ceist:

253 Mr. Power asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for a new fire station in Naas, County Kildare; and when this project is likely to proceed. [14302/98]

Contract documents submitted by Kildare County Council for their proposed new fire station in Naas are under consideration in my Department. Having regard to the capital available to the fire services capital programme and the current level of demands. I cannot say at this stage when approval may be given to proceed to tender stage.

John Browne

Ceist:

254 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to approve a new fire station for Wexford; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the firemen there are working in deplorable conditions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14348/98]

The provision of a fire service, including the provision of fire stations for its brigades, is the responsibility of the fire authority concerned. My Department may contribute towards the expenditure of a fire authority in providing a fire service and, in that connection, approval-in-principle issued to Wexford County Council on 4 June 1997 for the provision of a new fire station in Wexford. The next step in the process is for the council to submit detailed design and cost plans to my Department.
