Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Blood Supply.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

59 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Health and Children the position in relation to the blood supply; if the recent difficulties have now been resolved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14240/98]

There are sufficient stocks of blood available at present to meet current demands from hospitals. The Blood Transfusion Service Board requires approximately 2,500 blood donations each week to ensure adequate stocks are available. This weekly level has been maintained since the board launched a national appeal for donations on 13 May. In order to support the appeal I launched the BTSB's national media campaign on 20 May. This campaign is on-going at present and emphasises the benefit to patients of blood donations.

I again urge people to attend blood donor clinics to ensure that the current satisfactory supply situation is maintained, particularly over the summer months.
