Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

98 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will make funding available to carry out works to the pier at Kells Bay, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14187/98]

The pier at Kells Bay is owned by Kerry County Council and its repair and maintenance is the responsibility of the local authority. A list of piers and harbours in the county, including Kells Bay, in respect of which the county council wishes to secure funding for improvement works has been submitted to my Department.

The funding available for harbour development and improvement works is limited and is, of necessity, focused primarily on the key fishery harbours. I regret it is unlikely, therefore, that aid can be provided for works at Kells Bay in the short-term. The matter will, however, be kept under review, in consultation with Kerry County Council, having regard to available resources.
