Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Dukes — the threatened closure of the Curragh swimming pool in the Curragh Camp, County Kildare; (2) Deputy Upton — the need to address the serious defects in the science and technology programme for the third level sector; (3) Deputy McGinley — the serious employment situation in the north-west, especially in County Donegal, where according to the IDA annual report for 1997 less than 2 per cent of overall jobs created in IDA associated industries went to the region; (4) Deputy Lawlor — the soaring costs of rental accommodation in the Dublin area for individuals and families on low incomes with the attendant increase in homelessness and families being housed in B & Bs and hostels, the pressure for increases in rent allowances paid through the Eastern Health Board and for an increase in the house building programmes of the local authorities in the Dublin area; (5) Deputy Owen — the threatened loss of jobs at the Motorola plant in Swords, County Dublin; (6) Deputies Fitzgerald and Wall — the need to outline Government strategy on Army deafness compensation claims in light of the recent court decision and the £25 million cut in the Defence budget; (7) Deputy Roche — the need to request that the Dublin Transport Office review its failure to allocate funds for a park and ride facility in Greystones, County Wicklow, as chaos will occur when the DART extension becomes operational early next year; (8) Deputy Sargent — the need to ensure the trustees of the TSB consult the bank's customers as well as its unions before proceeding any further with negotiations on a proposed merger with ACC; (9) Deputy Gerard Reynolds — the need to ensure the Department of Education and Science does not reduce by one the number of teachers at Scoil na Maighdne Muire, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim; (10) Deputy Wall — the need for the Minister for Defence to clarify the Department's policy on Army deafness cases following yesterday's court judgment and if the Minister intends to cut his Department's budget to account for the decision; (11) Deputy Shortall — the need to urgently address the serious problem of the illegal sale of alcohol from domestic premises; and (12) Deputy Broughan — An géarghá atá ann le meánscoil nua lánGhaelach in Oirthuaisceart Bhaile Átha Cliath.

The matters raised by Deputies McGinley, Dukes, Fitzgerald, Wall and Sargent have been selected for discussion.
