Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

139 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, there are to open a consulate in Belfast in view of the decision to open consulates in Cardiff, Wales, and Edinburgh, Scotland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15066/98]

The Government has no plans to open a consulate in Belfast. There is already, as the Deputy is aware, a Joint Anglo-Irish Secretariat in Belfast which was established under the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement. In addition, the question of the location of the Joint Secretariats of the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference and the North-South Council, which are to be established under the British-Irish Agreement, are matters for consideration in due course between the relevant authorities.
