Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Court of Criminal Appeal.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

289 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform whether he is considering proposals to abolish the Court of Criminal Appeal; if so, the reason in this regard; the representations, if any, he has received in relation to the decision; and when he will introduce the necessary legislation. [14766/98]

The Courts and Court Officers Act, 1995, contains a provision at section 4 for the vesting of the powers of the Court of Criminal Appeal in the Supreme Court. The making of a commencement order in relation to this section and related sections is being considered in the context of a review of the position regarding the arrears of appeals before the Supreme Court.

Records are not maintained in such a manner as to facilitate the provision of the information requested by the Deputy in relation to representations.
