Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Weight of Schoolbags.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

76 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education and Science when the report on the weight of children's schoolbags was completed; when a copy will be forwarded to the Department of Health and Children in view of the fact that he had not received it by 16 June 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15021/98]

The Working Group on the Weight of Children's Schoolbags has recently finalised its report.

I understand that the group has addressed issues posed by the weight of schoolbags, in particular, the extent of the problem, the factors which contribute to the problem and possible implications, particularly for the health of pupils. The group has also formulated proposals and recommendations to alleviate problems associated with the weight of schoolbags.

I expect to be presented with a copy of the report very shortly. As soon as I have exmined its contents I will consider what further action is appropriate.
