Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Primary Teacher Training.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

80 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, there are to approve a further intake of postgraduate students for the Bachelor of Education degree for primary teacher training; the number of postgraduates to be taken on the course; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14844/98]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the 18 months' graduate diploma course in primary teaching for degree-holders.

My Department is currently in discussion with the authorities of the colleges of education and the Higher Education Authority about the arrangements to enable the colleges begin another such course during the 1998-99 academic year. As soon as the arrangements are finalised, the course, including the number of places, will be publicly advertised.
