Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

129 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the measures, if any, available to him to resource, encourage, facilitate and foster the work of community and residents groups in coastal locations, in particular community groups (details supplied) in County Kerry in respect of their activities in the area of coastal protection and protection of the foreshore environment and ecosystem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15868/98]

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

134 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources whether his attention has been drawn to damage recently occasioned to Banna Strand, County Kerry, described by local residents as very serious environment destruction; whether it is within his competence to issue a foreshore order that would have the effect of reinstating that which has been lost and of protecting the environment there; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15867/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 129 and 134 together.

My attention has been drawn in the context of the protection and management of the coastal area and specifically regarding the foreshore area to the problem which has arisen in relation to the removal of beach material at Banna Strand.

Officials of my Department are examining the matter together with Kerry County Council with a view to establishing the appropriate course of action.
