Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Electricity Lines.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

163 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the widespread concern in the Cork Harbour region of the proposal by the ESB to erect a new line of high voltage power lines and pylons around the perimeter of the harbour so as to transfer additional power from the east side to the west side; if her Department has been consulted by the ESB in relation to this proposal; if she has received direct representations from any groups living in the area regarding this matter; if she has brought these representations to the attention of the board of the ESB; if she has requested the ESB to investigate alternative routes for this power line which would have less damaging impact upon the environment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15718/98]

I am fully aware of the concerns of the local communities in relation to this project. I have met the Cork Harbour Anti-Pylon Community Group and have also received representations from a range of local and community groups.

I have conveyed all these concerns directly/ orally to the chairman and chief executive of the ESB.
Decisions in relation to the siting of transmission lines and infrastructural development are matters for the board and management of ESB.
The proposal has been subject to the full rigours of the planning process and has received the necessary planning approvals.
