106 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Finance the number of civil servants employed by the Government on 1 June 1998 for each Department; the way in which this compares with figures at 1 June 1997; the agreed establishment number for each Department according to Government policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Data on Civil Service numbers is collected quarterly on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. As a result civil service numbers for 1 June are not available. The closest date to 1 June 1997 for which figures are available is 1 July 1997; while the latest 1998 staff numbers are for 1 April. Subsequent to the July 1997 staffing numbers return, the names and staffing of Departments were changed, so the line up of Departments differs for the returns from 1 October 1997 onwards.
