Vol. 493 No. 5

Written Answers. - Air Services.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

105 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position regarding efforts to find a new carrier for the Carrickfin, County Donegal to Glasgow, Scotland air service. [16683/98]

The policy of my Department is to actively encourage and welcome new services on all routes to and from Ireland. With the completion of the single market in air transport, within the European economic area — EEA — airlines are free to provide air services on any route within the EEA without Government or EU control subject to the availability of slots. The question of whether any EEA airline wishes to exercise such rights on any particular route is entirely a matter therefore for the commercial judgment of such airlines. I am aware that Donegal Airport management are currently engaged in efforts to secure a new operator for the route in question.
