Vol. 494 No. 3

Written Answers - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

238 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will clarify the situation in relation to progress on the planned north Dublin interceptor sewer; if design or construction contracts have been entered into; if a firm decision has been made on the distance or route of the sewer; if so, if it will run from Finglas to Sutton; the expected timetable for future progress by stages; and if procedures can be speeded up to allow the northern fringe of the city to avail of and enjoy the benefits of the current positive economic climate. [18238/98]

The preliminary report (P. R.) for the North Dublin drainage scheme, which is to provide for major extensions to the drainage system in the north Dublin area, was approved by my Department in November, 1997. Given the extent of the work involved, Dublin Corporation was requested to prepare contract documents initially for a number of key elements. Following approval by my Department of a brief for the appointment of consultants in July last, the local authority is currently engaged in the process of appointing consultants to prepare contract documents for the following main elements: the north fringe interceptor sewer, which will cross the Santry valley from Ballymun and generally run along the Mayne river valley to Baldoyle; a connection from this sewer to the proposed Sutton pumping station, and (c) the northern interceptor sewer, which will run from Finglas and connect into the proposed north fringe interceptor sewer at Ballymun.

In addition, the corporation was requested to prioritise the remaining elements of the preliminary report, and submit individual proposals for approval to my Department. These proposals are awaited. The corporation is looking at ways of fast-tracking key elements of the scheme. I am fully aware of the importance of this scheme in opening up land for development and my Department will assist in progressing it as quickly as possible.
