Vol. 494 No. 3

Written Answers - Landscaping Project.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

145 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will have arrangements made for a survey to be carried out of the surrounds of the Met Éireann complex in Glasnevin, Dublin 9; and if she will bring forward proper landscaping plans in view of the complaints of local residents. [18218/98]

Major recladding work on the facade of the Met Éireann headquarters building in Glasnevin was undertaken in 1993-94 and the opportunity was then taken to landscape the surrounding grounds. Under the expert guidance of the Office of Public Works, surface mulch dressing was applied and specially selected shrubs were planted. These shrubs are now at various stages of maturity.

Met Éireann is very environmentally aware and is particularly conscious of the desirability of maintaining good relations with the local residents. In this context, I am happy to state that very few complaints have been made to Met Éireann in recent years.
However, I understand that some of the shrubs are overhanging the wall close to the public footpath and may possibly be a cause of complaint; these will be cut back immediately. I would like to thank Deputy Ahern for bringing this matter to attention. Following discussions with Met Éireann it has been agreed to devote even greater attention to the condition of the grounds.
