The overall thrust of Government policy in relation to people with physical and sensory disabilities is to provide the supports necessary to enable them to live in the community with the maximum possible degree of independence. This involves the provision of a wide range of health services, such as respite care, day care, therapy services and home supports, including personal assistance services.
As recommended by the Review Group on Health and Personal Social Services for People with Physical and Sensory Disabilities in its report, Towards an Independent Future, co-ordinating committees for physical and sensory disability services have been set up in each of the health boards. The voluntary agencies providing services in the sector are represented on these committees. The priorities for the allocation of available additional funding for the development of services, including personal assistance services, are decided by the boards in consultation with the co-ordinating committees. This year £3 million has been provided for the development of these services.
